To be of matter is to have substance. This work attempts to reckon with the the weight of matter both corporeally and spiritually. It is about death. Death which can be seen, touched and held, but also exists deep beneath the surface. Photography has an inherent relationship to death, as do I. I want to hold on to what I can no longer touch, to make meaning from things that seem inconsequential, to make direct eye contact when I want to avert my gaze, to acknowledge the presence of an absence, to simultaneously fight against and memorialize the plague of impermanence, and to embalm what remains. This is why I photograph.
